century, belonging to the Italian Rennaisance, Flemish, Dutch,

German, Austrian, French and Hungarian art schools.

The

religious art collection from Banat

consist of over 1000 works, most of them being paint-

ed on wood. This collection offers the possibility to identify the preferences of the local church

builders (of Romanian and Serbian origin) and displays works by the most important local

painters of the 18

century: Nedelcu Popovici, Andrei Andreevici, Ștefan Tenețchi or George

Diaconovici. The transition from the origina wood icon to the one painted on canvas, practiced

by the 19th century artists from Banat, is illustrated in the collection by Mihail Velcelean,

Dimitrie Turcu, Nicolae Hașca, Nicolae Mărășescu. The iconographic material of the religious

art collection exemplifies the two directions, traditional and Western, which caracterised

the artistic creation destined to the Orthodox communities from the multi-ethnic and multi-

confessional region of Banat.

The

century art collection from Banat

was establishd by Zsigmond Ormós (1813-

1894) who collected, along with European art, paintings signed by local artists such as Imre

Vizkelety, Elek Szamossy, Anton Fialla, Nicolae Popescu, Ede Komlóssy or Wodiczky.

Later, the collection was enriched by neoclassical pastel paintings by Anselm Wagner, Bie-

dermeier portraits by Gábor Melegh and Károly Brocky, “primitivism” works by Dimitrie

Turcu, or realist portraits by Ioan Zaicu, illustrating the direction of the Banatian painting

in a period of over 120 years. At the end of the 19

century, the rupture from Wien school

of art is produced. Thus, the portraits by János Wälder, who was taught at the Budapest Art

Academy, or genre scenes by Adolf Humborg, influenced by the Düsseldorf painting school

or works by Stevan Aleksić, taught at Munich.

The

Inter-war art collection from Banat

illustrates the new artistic currents: constructiv-

ism, cubism, expressionism and post-impressionism: Alexandru Popp, Oskar Szuhanek, Catul

Bogdan, Aurel Ciupe, Atanasie Demian Albert Varga, Ştefan Szőnyi, Ioan Isac, Stefan Jäger

or the remarkable Julius Podlipny, to name just a few of the most important painters of that

time. From the inter-war period emerges the museum’s sculpture collection, with works by

artists such as erdinand Gallas, Andrei Gál, Sebastian Rotschingk and Dezideriu Novac.

The

contemporary art collection

contains works by artists from the second part of the 20

centu-

ry. During that period, Timişoara became one of the most important and dynamic centers of avant-

garde in Romania. Groups like

Sigma

and

were well known at national and international scale.

Corneliu Baba

, one of the most prodigious Romanian painters of the 20

century, has a special

place in Timişoara Museum of Art. His most important works were donated by the master to the

people of Timişoara, in memory of the years he spent here as a young artist. The opening of the

museum coincided with the celebration of the painter’s centenary.

The

decorative art collection

consists of about 1.500 pieces and is divided into distinctive

sub-collections: furniture, ceramics, glass, clocks, rugs, and common metal and wood objects.

Speaking of the artistic significance, the pieces of this collection exemplify the European styles

starting from the 18

century until the emerging of Second World War. Historically and statisti-

cally, they certify the European and Romanian production through the workshops and factories

in which they were produced.

o instițuție dinamică, avînd o bogată activitate expozițională, artistcă, șiințifică și culturală.

Prin tot ceea ce concepe și pune în viață,

MArT

și-a propus să devină parte intergrantă a

muzeografiei europene a secolului XXI. Organizează evenimente cu impact național și

internațional, conferințe, lansări de carte, concerte și sesiuni științifice, publică albume,

cataloage, monografii, reviste în limbile romană și engleza, promovează cultura artistică și

umanistă la nivel local, național și internațional.

Sigma, colecția de ceramică și sticlărie produsă în atelierele celebre din Europa Centrală

Banatului românesc și sârbesc, clasici ai picturii românești (Nicolae Grigorescu, Nicolae

Tonitza, Ion Andreescu, Sava Henția).

se înscrie în circuitul artistic și muzeografic

versale, ca de exemplu acelea semnate de

ș.a. Multe dintre acestea joacă un rol esențial în formarea publicului

românesc iubitor de artă.

Timişoara Museum of Art

was founded on the first of January 2006, emerging from the

Art Section of the Banat Museum, in the city of Timişoara – the most important city of the

Banat province and the town which started the anti-communist revolution in 1989. The vi-

cinity of the city with Hungarian and Serbian border gives its ethnical and cultural diversity

and welcomes tourists and business-men from all over the Europe.

The building that hosts the Timişoara Art Museum is a great Baroque Palace designed by

architect J. Klein and built by the Habsbourgs in the 18

century (1752-1754) in the Union

Square (Domplatz), former administrative centre of the city.

The patrimony of Timişoara Art Museum consists of over 6000 pieces: paintings, gravures,

sculptures, decorative art and furniture. The paintings range from the Italian Renaissance

period to the 20

century European and Romanian art. It also includes the most important

collection of paintings created by Banat artists from the 18

century to present day.

The core of the

European art

gallery

consists of Zsigmond Ormós’s (1813-1894) dona-

tion, a very important figure of the cultural life from Banat region, important collector and

founder of the first museum in Timişoara. The European art collection includes paintings
